Salazar on the Issues...

I am running for the U.S. Senate because...

I am troubled at the pace with which the leaders of our country are eroding the rights, freedoms, and liberty granted us by our Constitution. I feel a strong sense of duty to do what I can to restore and protect those rights.

The United States of America is the greatest country in the world, but there are still many challenges ahead that we must face. Americans are hurting as they struggle to make ends meet, pay ever-increasing taxes, keep their jobs and homes, and worry about the future of their families.

We as leaders have a duty to restore this country to its former greatness by restoring its financial security, independence, safety, and prosperity. We must insist on fiscal responsibility, independent energy sources, strong national defense, and less government interference in our personal lives and businesses.

Where I stand on...

ECONOMY
As a small business owner, I understand that our economy is strongest when Americans keep more of their hard-earned money. Consumers can then buy more goods and businesses can create new jobs and improve their products. I will be a fiscal watchdog who will fight big government, vote against higher taxes, and eliminate wasteful spending. I strongly support the free market.

ENERGY AND NATURAL RESOURCES
We must utilize and expand ALL forms of energy, including hydro-electric power, nuclear energy, clean coal technology, natural gas, bio-fuels, solar, and wind power in order to maintain a powerful national defense and a strong manufacturing base.

VETERAN AFFAIRS
As an American Veteran, I know how important it is to take care of the men and women who have defended this country. Veterans’ benefits and rights must be increased and sustained if we are to take care of those heroes who have taken care of us by putting their lives on the line for freedom.

NATIONAL DEFENSE
Protecting American lives is the most important role of government. To do that, we must ensure that our borders are secure and our military is properly funded and equipped.

The American taxpayer should not be burdened with the cost of trying terrorists in civilian courts. Enemies of the U.S. should be tried in military tribunals, thus saving taxpayer dollars.

EDUCATION
As a parent, I am passionate about improving the quality of our public schools. I believe this can only be accomplished when control is given back to the States to ensure that educational policies reflect a community’s values and needs.

HEALTH CARE
Every American deserves quality healthcare, but I am opposed to a universal healthcare system. I support strengthening the existing private market system with policies that will drive down costs and allow citizens to access care.

JUDICIAL NOMINATIONS
I support judges who will strictly interpret our Constitution and respect the rule of law in accordance with that document. I strongly oppose judges that bring an activist approach to the bench.

SECOND AMENDMENT
The ability to defend oneself and one’s family is a basic human right that must be protected at all cost. Every law-abiding American has the right to own a firearm for the purpose of defense.

CARD CHECK
The rights of workers should be protected, but the union-supported “card check” system opens the door to pressure and intimidation by the unions that disrupts the workplace and threatens the livelihoods of American businesses.

IMMIGRATION
I recognize our strength as a nation was built on the legal immigrant experience, so I welcome and encourage legal immigration.

Illegal entries into the country through our uncontrolled borders are not just a law enforcement problem anymore but also one of national security. We need to reinforce the U.S. Border Patrol. I contend that controlling the entry of immigrants into the country -- both legal and illegal – is the constitutional duty of the Federal government and should be enforced by that jurisdiction and not the states.

We need to focus on immigration reform encouraging legal immigration by combining all visas into a comprehensive visa reducing cost, fraud, redundancy, and increasing border security. In other words, we need to emphasize the importance of entering the United States legally.
